Room Design

Design_pic_3With over 10 years of experience, we can design cost-effective shielding for all types of medical imaging facilities, including radiography, fluoroscopy, and computed tomography.

For x-ray rooms we use the design principles of NCRP 147 (2004) – Structural Design for Medical X-Ray Imaging Facilities and BIR Radiation Shielding for Diagnostic X-rays for the physical shielding. Our experience enables us to design user-friendly rooms to enhance patient flow and optimize staff workflow. In Canada these designs conform to the requirements of Health Canada Safety Code 35 – Radiation Protection in Radiology (2008).

A common process would be as follows:

  1. Review the radiation facilities from the architectural plans to design radiation shielding to reduce the doses to below the regulatory levels. Note is also taken of any improvements which can be made in locations of equipment or fixed shielding.
  2. We work with the lead installer to provide advice at the mockup stage. Each wall is then inspected before final boarding.
  3. When the equipment is installed the shielding attenuation is verified by measurement of radiation in all surrounding areas.
  4. Reports are written for the regulatory authorities at the local or federal level, who have to give authorization for use of the facility.
